This week is Money Smart Week (April 6th-12th). Money Smart Week, started because “money doesn’t come with instructions,” is a coming together of financial institutions, not-for-profits, schools, libraries and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. There are more than 300 free educational classes, seminars and activities around the state of Illinois that will focus on financial topics for people of all walks of life.
I will be part of an event on Thursday, April 10 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the Normal Public Library. The title of the event, Financial Fitness . . . It’s Priceless, is the same name of the guide that spawned this event. The guide and program were developed by Deborah B. Gentry, Ed.D. of Illinois State University. Dr. Gentry is the Associate Dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology.
The guide, and Thursday’s program, is “about the nature and extent of financial literacy and insecurity among individuals and families” and specifically addresses four main approaches to helping Americans reach financial fitness. The four approaches are:
1. Prevention Through Education
2. Provide Counseling/Advice
3. Expanded and Improved Regulation
4. Asset Building Strategies and Other Innovations
The four local experts discussing these four approaches are:
Tom Lucey, Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Illinois State University
David Hill, Chestnut Health Systems, Credit Counseling
Larry Maschhoff, President and CEO, Bank of Illinois
Mark J. Aubry, Managing Director of Aubry & Eustice
I am looking forward to this event and welcome your attendance, if you are in the area. Should you have any questions, contact my office.
